Social Media: A trending Force

In recent years, social media are increasingly and widely used. Information and communication technology has changed rapidly over the past 20 years with a key development being the emergence of social media. Social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to describe what we post on sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, snapchat etc. The term is used so vaguely that it can basically be used to describe almost any website on the internet today. Since its creation, social media has been rapidly changing the world. Their impact is extending from the individual user to the situated environment. Social media is being used in ways that shape politics, business, world culture, education, careers, innovation, and more. Social media has revolutionized the way we view ourselves, the way we see others and the way we interact with the world around us.

A few decades ago it was pretty tough to connect with people. Across the globe, mobile devices dominate in terms of total minutes spent online. This puts the means to connect anywhere, at any time on any device in everyone’s hands. The rise of mobile phones helped change this, connecting people in a new way, but then social networks sprang up and the whole idea of friendship changed again. Social Networks, or Social Media Sites, which are the main actors in the Social Media medium, can be defined as online communities of people who typically share a common interest or activity, providing a variety of ways for users to interact and having the ability to facilitate communication. Social media platforms ranging from WeChat to Twitter offer both opportunities and challenges in the ways people communicate and interact in various types of relationships. It gives people a way to stay in touch with people who live far away. It lets people share fun, interesting and informative content. It gives businesses a way to engage with customers. It allows for self-expression and can serve as a creative outlet for individuals to express themselves, share their artwork and share their voice on specific topics.

In the current modern societies, Social Media channels are commonly used in order to connect people together throughout the world using the Internet. This increase in communications and virtual connectedness has also opened the world to new ways of acquiring, developing, and managing talent and work, and is changing the way work is distributed and sourced. Whether it is through social networks, forums, blogs or media sharing websites, people can now have a conversation online, also called interactive dialogue, with anybody and on any subject, permitting them to share their experiences and valuable information. The mass adoption of connected digital technologies and applications by consumers, enterprises, and governments, has realized significant benefits in their economies, their societies, and the functioning of their public sectors. In addition, it is also changing the perceptions that people have around work and working, and overall work culture. Around the world, people now spend more time using laptop computers and smartphones than they do in other daily activities, and our “connected time” is on the rise. In mobile banking and payments, innovative services are emerging forces. For navigation, Google Maps has become indispensable, while research platforms are becoming common location-based reference points; Dropbox is a favorite for data storage and sharing; Skype for low-cost calls; Evernote for personal information and many more. The greater use of digital media today is changing people’s everyday lives and the way they connect and collaborate in the broader societal context, at work and in civil society. Social Media is definitely all about sharing and aiming at a collective vision, often intending to offer a more-appropriated or informed choice at the end.

Technology is becoming more affordable than ever. Almost everyone has their own social media accounts. The development of mobile technology has played an important role in shaping the impact of social media. Internet can be said as the base of telecommunication systems and social networks are extensions of the internet. Almost a quarter of the world’s population is now on Facebook. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the web. It is a new forum that brings people to exchange idea, connect with, relate to, and mobilize for a cause, seek advice, and offer guidance. Since social networks feed off interactions among people, they become more powerful as they grow. In today’s world, it is undeniable that social media plays an important role in impacting our culture, our economy and our overall view of the world.
