Why Holistic Healing?

Living on this planet has become a challenge in these modern times, facing pressures that were totally unknown to our forefathers. Pressures that bear on all aspects of life: personal, social, financial, healthwise, studies, nothing is spared. The holistic being – body, mind and soul – the whole package is affected. For it is a fact that all these three are interrelated and interdependent. What effects one is reflected in its counterparts. Stress eating away at a mind is bound to show repercussions on the body and indiscernably on the soul as well. So how can only one aspect be treated? Nothing less than a holistic approach would be a viable option, thus leading to the current preference for Holistic healing, as it takes into consideration all three aspects, making it a perfect New Age modality.

The aim of holistic or “wholistic” healing is to address all parts of an individual, not just the physical aspect of a person where manifested illnesses are most visible. Holistic healing is an ongoing process and is intended to become a way of life. It is an evolving journey of discovery unraveling answers and ultimately allowing one to live a better life, be healthier, and strive for wholeness.

Holistic healing encourages a holistic approach to seeking treatment for imbalances and choosing to live a more balanced lifestyle. What primarily distinguishes holistic healing apart from alternative medicine, complementary medicine, and integrative medicine is that physical health is not necessarily the main focus. Physical symptoms are a warning of some deep rooted imbalances which invariably arise from the emotional state of the person. Even so, it is often the experience of physical discomfort that will first prompt a person’s pursuit of holistic healing. However, modalities of holistic healing are not a replacement of conventional medicine. Their utilisation should be more from a preventive or supportive standpoint.

The types of holistic therapies available are extensive. Among them are:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Ayurveda medicine
  • Natural diet
  • Exercise
  • Spiritual Counseling
  • Vibrational Medicine
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Naturopathic medicine
  • Reiki
  • Energy-based Therapies
  • Prayerful Intention
  • Past life regression and many more.

Holistic healing is really a life style approach and has to be adopted as a way of life. It goes beyond physical healing and seeks to eradicate the very source of the imbalance being caused in the body. So whether it springs from emotional upheavals in this lifetime or a past lifetime, the holistic healer delves deeply into the psyche of an individual to liberate all causes. All parts of a person’s life are taken into account. Physical healing, mental health and wellness, emotional well-being, and spiritual beliefs and value, all are considered. The holistic approach requires an in-depth analysis of the mental attitude of the patient towards life and environment. It is most essential to understand this as it is one of the major reasons causing dis-ease in the body.

No doubt stress was unknown to our forefathers, yet they had a understanding of holistic treatment. They believed in the ancient idea that healing is most effective when you consider the whole person, rather than focusing on specific illnesses, body parts or symptoms. As Socrates said in the 4th century B.C., “the part can never be well unless the whole is well.”

Two of the most popular ancient holistic health traditions are Traditional Chinese Medicine, which originated almost 5,000 years ago and Ayurveda, the ancient medical tradition of India. Ayurveda traces its origins to a text written by Sushruta, the “father of Surgery,” in the 6th century B.C. Both these modalities treated the human being as a small universe of interconnected energies, where the whole won over the part, in the quest for optimal health and wellness.

As already stated, physical ailments are a manifestation of a much deeper disorder, so almost all diseases can be traced to some pent up emotion. When you feel an emotion, what you’re really sensing is the vibration of a particular energy. Each emotion has its own vibratory signature, and when intense emotions are felt, they can become trapped in your body. Trapped emotional energy will typically result in physical dysfunction. Thus the actual cause of all diseases may be traced to such emotions like pride, cruelty, hate, self-love, ignorance, instability, greed and so on.

Pride, which is arrogance and rigidity of mind, will give rise to those diseases which produce rigidity and stiffness of the body. Pain is the result of cruelty, whereby the patient learns through personal suffering not to inflict it upon others, either from a physical or from a mental standpoint. Hate gives rise to loneliness, violent uncontrollable temper, and conditions of hysteria. Ignorance, lack of wisdom and a persistence in refusing to see the truth, brings on short-sightedness, impairment of vision and hearing. Instability of mind must lead to the same quality in the body with those various disorders which affect movement and co-ordination. The result of greed and domination of others is such diseases as will render the sufferer a slave to his own body, with desires and ambitions.

Holistic healing, therefore, becomes a necessary component for the well being of an individual as it is only through holistic modalities that a complete overhauling of the body, mind and soul can be done. Holistic treatment is also based on the belief that unconditional love and support is the most powerful healer and a person is ultimately responsible for his or her own health and well-being, as only he can bring about the essential lifestyle modifications. Holistic health is a state of balance, not simply an absence of illness. A holistic health education teaches the interconnection of mind, body, spirit and environment, integrating all into a perfect whole—just as it has for thousands of years.
