“This has been the initiative of the government of Assam. The indigenous games of Assam are the basic traits of the people and intrinsic parts of our socio-cultural life.Organising these games is an effort to revive the traditional games of the indigenous communities. These games are expected to strengthen the feelings of brotherhood on which society is build.Human civilizations have always revered sports. Our ancestors experienced playing these sports and we have to give priority to sports to be able to understand these sports”, said Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister, Assam soonafter inaugurating the 1st All Assam Indigenous Games Festival at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in R.G.Baruah Sports Complex, Guwahati on April 10.
“We are organising it for the first time due to the keen interest and eagerness shown by our Chief Minister. We are taking into consideration all the games that are played by most of the communities in Assam. They reflect the colourful traditions of the people. We are trying to revive them and make them popular among people. It is a part of the initiative of the government to make this city the sports’ capital of the country”, said Naba Kumar Doley, Minister, Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam.
